The opportunity
The brief for this family kitchen play area was to introduce organisation and create an inviting zone where children could enjoy themselves while a parent was cooking or spending time in the adjacent living room. The design needed to balance functionality with personality, ensuring the area complemented the rest of the open-plan home.
We introduced custom joinery and smart storage to keep the space tidy, using bright accents and tactile finishes to encourage creativity and play. The result is a practical yet beautiful corner that enhances daily family routines while giving children a place of their own within the heart of the home.

Design Highlights
Custom-Made Table and Feature Wall
A small custom-made table was designed to fit perfectly within the existing space, allowing the original children’s chairs to be reused. The freshly painted feature wall adds colour and energy, transforming the corner into a cheerful and welcoming area for play, crafts, and family interaction. The combination of custom furniture and vibrant colour instantly lifts the atmosphere of the room.
Sustainable Design and Enhanced Lighting
Existing furniture pieces, including the IKEA Trofast console and children’s chairs, were repaired and reused to ensure sustainability and visual continuity. Accent lighting and a playful hanging pendant were added to bring warmth and definition to the space, highlighting its textures and colours. The result is a practical yet stylish corner that feels connected to the rest of the family kitchen.
Organised Storage with Personalised Details
The play area was completed with organised storage for toys and craft materials using the IKEA console, updated with beautifully customised wooden labels. The existing framed chalkboard was retained and integrated into the new layout, adding a nostalgic and creative touch. This balance of new and old elements gives the space warmth, functionality, and personality.

Transforming this adorable corner of the family kitchen was a true delight. With a fresh design perspective, we introduced a cheerful new colour palette and commissioned a locally made children’s table to match the existing chairs, even repairing one to maintain its original charm.
The IKEA Trofast shelf was cleverly used for organisation, allowing art supplies, toys, and craft materials to be stored neatly in separate compartments, each with personalised wooden labels that make tidying up fun and easy. The framed chalkboard was retained as a playful feature, working beautifully within the refreshed design.
New accent lighting and a carefully chosen pendant brought the space together, making the play area both functional and inviting. This revitalised play corner is now a joyful spot for creative activities and quiet moments, right in the heart of the home.
